Healing Through a Nervous System
Informed Approach

Moving from survival to connection

Understanding the Nervous System

Many people come to therapy feeling stuck in patterns of anxiety, overwhelm, emotional reactivity, shutdown, or disconnection. While these experiences can be frustrating, they often make sense when viewed through the lens of the nervous system.

At Arise Counseling, we recognize that many emotional and behavioral struggles are not simply problems to be fixed—they are adaptive responses developed by the nervous system in an effort to protect us.

Using insights from Polyvagal Theory, we help clients understand how their nervous system responds to stress, relationships, and life experiences, creating a foundation for lasting healing and change.

What is Polyvagal Theory?

Polyvagal Theory helps explain how our nervous system constantly scans for cues of safety and danger. These responses happen automatically and often outside of conscious awareness.

When we feel safe and connected, we are better able to:

  • Think clearly

  • Regulate emotions

  • Connect with others

  • Be present in our lives

  • Navigate challenges effectively

When the nervous system perceives danger, it may shift into survival responses such as:

  • Anxiety or panic

  • Hypervigilance

  • Irritability or anger

  • Emotional overwhelm

  • People-pleasing

  • Numbness or disconnection

  • Fatigue or shutdown

These responses are not signs of weakness. They are protective strategies that helped us survive difficult experiences.

A Different Way of Looking at Symptoms

Rather than viewing symptoms as something to eliminate, we seek to understand the experiences that shaped them and the ways your nervous system has worked to protect you.

Through this lens, symptoms are viewed with curiosity and compassion rather than judgment.

As clients begin to understand their nervous system patterns, they often experience greater self-awareness, self-compassion, and hope for change.

What does this look like in therapy?

Understanding your nervous system is an ongoing process. In therapy, we work together to help you recognize patterns of activation, build regulation skills, and develop a greater sense of safety, flexibility, and connection in your daily life.

Treatment may include:

  • EMDR therapy

  • Mindfulness and grounding skills

  • Somatic awareness

  • Emotional regulation strategies

  • Attachment-focused work

  • Trauma-informed interventions

  • Resourcing and stabilization techniques

Our goal is not to eliminate all stress or difficult emotions, but to help your nervous system become more flexible, resilient, and capable of navigating life's challenges.

Moving from Survival to Connection & Growth

Many of the wounds we carry develop within relationships, and healing often happens through safe, supportive relationships as well. At Arise Counseling, we strive to create a therapeutic environment where you feel seen, understood, and accepted.

As your nervous system experiences greater safety and connection, it can begin to release old patterns of protection that may no longer be serving you. Over time, many clients find themselves responding to life with greater flexibility, resilience, and confidence rather than remaining stuck in survival mode.

As healing unfolds, you may notice:

  • Greater emotional stability

  • Reduced anxiety and overwhelm

  • Improved relationships

  • Increased confidence and self-compassion

  • More energy and engagement with life

  • A deeper sense of peace, connection, and purpose

Healing is not about becoming a different person. It is about helping your nervous system rediscover its natural capacity for safety, connection, resilience, and growth.
